GLASGOW certainly looks like a city that is doing well in building on its position as a major conference destination on an international stage.

It is easy to see the continuing development of the city’s hotel sector, through major investment in new openings and on existing properties.

The hotel sector has, of course, been a major beneficiary over the decades of major conferences taking place in the city, many of them at the recently rebranded Scottish Event Campus, which includes the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre and the SSE Hydro.

Glasgow’s hotel sector has also enjoyed a boost in recent years from the Hydro’s success in attracting major international music stars to play in the city, as well as from this venue’s hosting of big-name comedians and a raft of other entertainment events.

The estimated revenues from future conference business secured by Glasgow during the year to March are £142m. This is only slightly ahead of the estimated £141m of future revenues from conferences won by the city in the prior 12 months. However, exceeding this prior-year figure is no mean feat.

Glasgow is capitalising to good effect on its significant prowess in the medical and life sciences arena to attract some of the big international conferences in this sector to the city. It is, across sectors, doing well in winning more international conferences.

Hosting such prestigious conferences boosts the city’s reputation further.

This hopefully ensures a virtuous circle for the city’s economy as more major conferences come to Glasgow.
