Although originally to have been called The Homecoming, Saturday's programme by the Calton Consort jettisoned this year's over-exploited name without depriving itself of what mattered -the cogent array of interesting Scottish music that formed its theme.

It was the peculiar Scottishness of the music that this admirable young group of voices and their conductor Jason Orringe chose to explore. The music included two Latin settings by James MacMillan and William Sweeney's strongly-wrought Psalm of the Land, to words by Aonghas Macneacail, with Robert Carver's Mass, Pater Creator Omnium, acting as fountainhead. A poignant but unsentimental evening.
