Name: Stephen and Anna Richardson.

Name: Stephen and Anna Richardson.

Occupation: Stephen, 30, is a chartered engineer. Anna, 28, is a full-time mother to their children - two-year-old Rebecca and Thomas, who is six months old.

Home: Two-bedroom flat in Battlefield, Glasgow.

Personal circumstances: The family own an eight-year-old Ford Focus and Mr Richardson used to commute to work in it every day, first to Edinburgh and then to Prestwick. He now works in Govan, Glasgow, and has started cycling to work. This was partly because of "not wanting to increase my carbon footprint" and it also allows him to get more exercise and save money on fuel.

He now uses the car as little as possible and instead of having to put petrol in twice a week he fills up his car once every two months.

Mrs Richardson uses public transport to get around. The family also try to do their bit for the environment by recycling and buying food without excess packaging.

Budget hopes: Mr Richardson said: "I'd like to see more people being made aware of the impact they have on the environment and being empowered to make decisions based on that."

Budget reaction: Mr Richardson: "The car scrappage scheme is certainly something I would have been interested in. It could help to get more energy-efficient cars on the road."

He also welcomed the investment in renewable energy but expressed scepticism about the government's commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 34% by 2020.
