Class A drugs are circulating among young teenagers at an island school, police confirmed yesterday.

Strathclyde Police said they had received "strong intelligence" that LSD and ecstasy were being taken by pupils at Tobermory High School, on the island of Mull. The town is the setting for the BBC's children's programme Balamory.

The force said a series of dawn raids had been carried out following "intelligence from various sources in the community", including the school itself.

The pupils involved are said to be aged around 15 or 16 and part of the senior school - which shares a campus with a primary.

Sergeant Angie Macdonald, a drugs enforcement officer now stationed in the town, said Class A, B and C substances including LSD, mushrooms and herbal cannabis had been seized, although the discovery was "not being linked to a pupil".

Ms Macdonald said: "We have gathered strong, reliable intelligence about what is going on at the school. It came from various different sources in the community. Obviously, this is of great concern to us. We have taken some steps to address this already."

She added: "As a result of the intelligence we received, we obtained search warrants for two houses in Tobermory. We found drugs in one house and a 37-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man have been reported to the fiscal."

Mull councillor Mary-Jean Devon said: "Like a lot of people I am very concerned that these kind of drugs appear to be surfacing on the island, particularly among such a young age group.

"I am keen that we send out a message that drugs will not be tolerated here, and I would urge others to co-operate as much as possible with the police in rooting out this problem."
