A company that makes clothes for Hollywood movies is opening its first Scottish store in Glasgow.

Belstaff will unveil its new outlet in the city's Princes Square later this summer.

The firm is famous for its leather jackets that have been worn by Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds and Mission Impossible, Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Aviator.

The company has stores in London and Manchester as well as Spain and Italy and has picked Glasgow for its new opening because of its trendy reputation.

A company spokeswoman said: "There is huge potential in Scotland and especially Glasgow. With a thriving creative industry for fashion, music and the arts it really was the obvious choice. It has an edge and is definitely ready for brands such as Belstaff."

The company's clothes are also popular with motorbike riders. TV stars Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman wore specially-designed jackets from the company on their Long Way Down trip.

And Belstaff released the Steve McQueen Trialmaster jacket - modelled after the jacket McQueen wore at the International Six Day Trials in East Germany in 1964 Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull star Harrison Ford and Bourne Ultimatum actor Matt Damon have also sported Belstaff outfits in their films and the firm often produces replica outfits so fans can get the look.

Off-screen Belstaff is a favourite of stars including George Clooney, Angelina Jolie and Victoria Beckham. But movie-star style doesn't come cheap. Leather jackets start at £350.

The firm was founded by Harry Grosberg in 1924 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, making waterproof clothing.

By 1930 it had also started making other products for the outdoors including goggles, boots, helmets and bags.

In 1943 it created its cult Black Prince motorbike jacket, and five years later Ernesto Che Guevara reportedly wore the firm's trialmaster jacket on his journey across South America as depicted in movie The Motorcycle Diaries.

The new shop, which will employ eight staff, will open at the end of July.

Yvonne Truelove, from the shopping centre, said: "There is a real excitement at the fact the brand has chosen to open here."
