Classic board game Cluedo has been updated for the 21st century after it was deemed too stuffy for modern tastes.

The murder-solving game was launched in 1946 with characters such as Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum and Reverend Green.

However, they have been killed off in favour of A-list starlet Kasandra Scarlet and ageing football legend-turned-pundit Jack Mustard and a former child star.

In the game where everyone is a suspect, even the murder locations now feature a spa and a home theatre in an overhaul of the old stately home.

Players can also choose from new weapons, including a dumbbell, an axe and a baseball bat.

Craig Wilkins, spokesman for manufacturer Hasbro, said: "We wanted to bring the game bang up to date.

"The new characters are more in tune with modern society and, with the added touch of a first name, more human.

"The new rooms and weapons have helped to give the game a much-needed face lift, and with the added risk of players being killed off mid-play we have definitely increased its tempo."

Hasbro has also added more intrigue to the game with each suspect having their own special skill, such as looking at other people's cards or starting a double rumour.

The new version of Cluedo will be released in time for Christmas.
