'HEY, little girl, comb your hair, fix your make-up, soon he will open the door.
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger, you needn't try any more ..." So Frank Sinatra once crooned in the ditty Wives And Lovers, succinctly capturing the casual sexism of the Mad Men era.
But it seems one woman has taken Ol' Blue Eyes at his word. Singer and fashion designer Gwen Stefani is preoccupied with looking her best for husband, Gavin Rossdale. "I like to make my husband like me more – and he likes it when I'm wearing make-up," she told Harper's Bazaar.
That thud was the sound of a gazillion female jaws hitting the floor in unison. Way to go Gwen, that's exactly the right message to be sending out to the legions of young girls who look up to you.
Next she'll be telling us to tie a ribbon in our hair and plaster on a smile to welcome our other half home, making sure dinner is on the table before running him a nice hot bath after a long day at the office.
Perhaps it irks as I always had Stefani, frontwoman in an all-male band, down as having a bit more gumption than that. But it would appear she is no more a paragon of feminist independence than the butt-wiggling Kim Kardashian.
But I do feel a bit sorry for Stefani. While the rest of us are slobbing on the sofa barefaced in tatty T-shirts and jog-bottoms, she has to constantly sidle off to the bathroom to top up her lippy.
Then again, who wants to live life permanently looking like you've been caught in an explosion in a Crayola factory? It must be exhausting. Gwen? Lost property called. You want to come and collect your brain?
