There is no place on TV for political grandstanding

WATCHING Scotland play England at Murrayfield last Saturday there was an eerie sense of something being missing.

Was it the small matter of the seven points between Scotland's score and England's? Was it comely cheerleaders dressed in the finest thermals? No, the occasion was entirely spoiled by Alex Salmond, the First Minister, not being allowed to play pundit in a pre-match television show.
