Alba's new viewing figures offer reason for optimism

News that BBC Alba's viewing figures have risen substantially and are outdoing those of the veteran Welsh language channel, S4C, will have been cheerfully received at the BBC and Gaelic media services company MG Alba, who made the bold move of launching the channel three years ago.

It’s true the increase in viewer numbers cannot be attributed entirely to fervour for Gaelic in hitherto unsuspected places. Screening of Scottish Premier League football and rugby matches has helped pull in many non Gaelic- speaking viewers, boosted by the decision to start broadcasting BBC Alba on Freeview in June.
