Just as they did for the Olympic flame in 2012, the crowds turned out to see the Commonwealth Games baton in the initial stages of its journey through Scotland yesterday.

Among those who carried it in West Lothian were some of the athletes who will take part in the games.

But there were many non-athletes too, such as labourer Davie Paterson, who has dedicated his life to raising money for charity since the death of his brother from cancer.

Mr Paterson is typical of the men and women who will be carrying the baton all over Scotland: people who have worked hard in their towns and villages and deserve recognition. The baton relay is a prelude to a great sporting event, but more than that, it is a celebration of local communities.
