Just imagine what it will mean for visitors to the Old Town of Edinburgh.

Just around the corner from the recently revamped National Museum of Scotland - voted the UK's top attraction by users of TripAdvisor earlier this year - and a short walk from the Royal Mile with the hugely popular castle at one end and the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the other, the Surgeons' Hall Museum is to be made into a world-class museum thanks to a £2.7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Edinburgh is not short of cultural advantages, but has not always been able to fully capitalise on what it has to offer. The Surgeons' Hall's new Lister Project will turn this fascinating den of medical memorabilia into a more inviting space with a new glass atrium, improved access and whole new galleries.

In a highly competitive global marketplace, what the city has to offer tourists has never been more important. This remarkable museum connects with visitors not only through the sheer fascination of seeing how medical treatment was meted out in past ages, but because of the Edinburgh medical establishment's association with the likes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. This grant will help ensure this museum takes its rightful place in the top tranche of Edinburgh's attractions.
