Market forces are creeping into higher education

These are days of uncertainty for higher education in Scotland.

From next year, students coming to Scotland from the rest of the UK to study will face university fees up to £9000 a year. Some commentators have said this change is unfair on students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland who will have to pay for a degree that Scots get for nothing, but now NUS Scotland have expressed the flip-side of the argument: namely, that fees for non-Scottish students could, in fact, impact badly on the Scottish students by squeezing them out in favour of students paying five-figure sums for their education.
