Pay deal requires urgent rethink

It will come as no surprise to teachers and parents that most Scottish local authorities are now struggling to find enough supply teachers to cover classes.

A survey by the Scottish Labour Party shows the number of teachers on the supply register has dropped substantially following a reduction the rate of pay for those who worked fewer than five consecutive days in the same school. Even Education Secretary Michael Russell has admitted that this controversial element of last year's teachers' pay agreement was "not the best deal for everybody". That was a considerable understatement in relation to supply teachers. By imposing the lowest hourly rate on all except those filling in for more than a week at a time in the same school, it effectively halved the pay of many.
