Reform that just isn't working

The reforms to the benefits system instigated by the Coalition Government are the most far-reaching in a generation.

The change in entitlement to Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) paid to sick and disabled people, intended to reduce the number of claimants by one million, is one of the most significant.

New figures from Citizens Advice Scotland revealed in The Herald today show the full impact will be felt over the next three years as more than two-thirds of the 170,000 Scots receiving disability or sickness benefits are expected to lose out. Although the Government has described it as moving claimants from benefits to work, only around 36,000 are likely to move on to Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) in Scotland. More than half will lose at least £99 a week by moving out of the benefits system altogether.
