One has tweeted.

And not even using the Royal Wii. The Queen, yes THE Queen, yesterday fired off her first microblog from an iPad. "Hashtag OMG," screamed Twitter, "HMQ is totes 21st century."

Her Majesty's late entry to the genre has let her parody @queen_uk build up more than a million followers with its regular announcements it is "gin o'clock".

This while the rather more staid royal account, @britishmonarchy, from where the defender of the faith issued her first tweet, is more notable by who it follows than its number of followers. The Queen, it appears, wants regular updates from her Prime Minister, David Cameron, but not her First Minister, Alex Salmond.

But her account also reveals she has more in common with her fellow pensioner subjects than one might have thought: she follows Phillip Schofield, darling of British grannies.

The Pope tweets. As do the aforementioned Messrs Cameron, Salmond and Schofield. So should Elizabeth R - as she signed her 140-character proclamation - do the same? Yes. Long may she blog over us. Just as long as she keeps the Duke of Edinburgh away from her iPad.
