Scottish council leaders are in London today to plead with ministers not to consign a 250mph rail link from London to Scotland to the dim and distant future.
Assuming they are letting the train take the strain, the fastest possible journey time between Glasgow Central and Euston is four hours and 10 minutes. As things stand, that figure will not improve by more than ten minutes for the next 10 or 15 years.
