I might be a cynic but we get the politicians we deserve

There was a spell, some years back, when certain of the people we elect to govern decided that cynicism had become a terrible national problem.

It was, indeed – for cliches never die – “corrosive”. And it was all the fault of the media. Back then, I developed an answer, of sorts. If asked, I said I was only ever cynical about anyone in public life who complained of cynicism.
