I EXPECT there are environmental objections to central heating, as it's efficient and makes our lives more comfortable.
That sort of thing generally comes at a price, though I can't see that central heating as such would be the problem, so much as the means used to generate it.
Perhaps there are no environmental objections to central heating, and I've been acknowledging something that doesn't exist, merely to protect my own back. To be fair to me, I did Google "environmental objections to central heating", but nothing much came up, so you can't say I didn't do any research.
Meanwhile, as dusk falls and sleekit, shivering shadows peer inside our windows, the central heating kicks in automatically and, this being a free country, you can stravaig aboot the hoose in your pants.
If you're a certain age and have ever knowingly been a student or a working class person — and I've been both — you'll be familiar with the bitter-heat experience of sitting in front of a one-bar electric fire. These never disseminated heat far and you'd to sit right close to them to thaw your face. That accomplished, lower limbs would then be bunged before the brutal heat-source, leading to scarring of the calves and bubbling in the veins, where blood had been heated to boiling point.
Central heating, on the other hand, envelops you gently, unless you have females on the strength, as these always need any heat source set to maximum. Birds of the feathered variety are another mystery: why don't they sleep on our warm houses instead of in trees? Also, why don't they grow fluff on their legs to stop them dropping off with cold in winter?
I'm not convinced evolution is all it's cracked up to be. But, indisputably, central heating was a great advance for northern humanity.
