In praise of - Change.

CHANGE: what is it as good as, readers?

That's right: lots of things. Clever people say that change is the only constant in the universe, reminding us of the sad truth that life is essentially paradoxical.

We all fear change and, at the same time, don't want stuck in a rut. The old "change is as good as a rest" cliché, which I managed to go one paragraph without invoking, has a ring of truth about it, hence the popularity that turned it into a cliché in the first place.

Even just getting out of the house for a change of scene is good for the soul. It's something to do with the eyelobes taking in new vistas, thereby stimulating the brainlobes and making you think life is worth living. Well, I've over-egged the p there, but you get my d.

You should make an effort to go somewhere different this weekend. If you live in Armadale, go to Bathgate. Try one of their chip shops for a change.

If you're contented, change can be a right pain. The Quite Good Lord never lets us rest on our laurels for a minute, and it's always wise to remember that we have not been put on this planet to enjoy ourselves. Put it this way: there's always something.

Today, in the modern-style world, the pace of change is said to be getting frenetic. Much of it is driven by the internet which, paradoxically enough, doesn't change fast enough and still isn't as good as proper, inky newspapers.

How often have you clicked on "latest news" to find an item from 2008?

Still, I'm sure that'll change. A world that never changed would soon drive us all doolally. It would be as awful as Heaven, an eternity of boring bliss.
