A well-regulated system would condemn this disgraced model to history

Professor Andrew Bain is justified in doubting the ability of an independent Scotland to stand behind banks like RBS and HBOS (Letters, February 1).

Looking at the efforts of the Bank of England, the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank to stand behind their banks by printing money and issuing bonds to escalate national debt, one might dare to question the received wisdom of taxpayers being bankrupted to support this disgraced fractional reserve banking system.
