John Jamieson Blanche claims that a federation of the four nations of the United Kingdom could be compared to the federal arrangements of Canada or the United States of America (Letters, July 20).
These are not apt comparisons. Unlike the UK, they comprise many more than four component provinces or states.
No single unit vastly outnumbers the combined population of the remainder as England would dominate under his scheme.
I know of no federal state similar to Mr Blanche's proposal.
