WHILE welcoming your coverage of the Carers (Scotland) Bill and the exciting proposals therein ("Ministers look into bill to give support to carers", The Herald, May 18, I would point out that the aims and objectives will only be possible with a significant increase in funding and a change in mindset.

In our area there exists nothing for us as carers or for our disabled son's siblings as young carers. Social work services have thus far failed to engage with many carers locally and we have recently been involved in setting up our own carers support group for autism spectrum disorders and related disabilities.

Much of our discussion to date centres around how to initiate support from health and social work services. My hope for the new Bill is that statutory services will be required to reach out to carers and families living with disabilities.
