Linda Urquhart, CBI Scotland chairwoman, referring to the upcoming independence referendum, mentions concerns about "possible damage that could be done to Scotland by the uncertainties arising from this commitment and its timing" ("Business leaders' independence warning", The Herald, September 2).

There has been a SNP government for more than a term and the referendum commitment and timing are certain.

The “damage” headlines from The Herald on the same day were: “Engineering sector in Scotland surges ahead” and “Chivas Brothers toasts strong global sales figures”. On the same day, Peter Hughes, chief executive of Scottish Engineering, told The Herald: “I didn’t expect [the industry] to be quite as strong as it is, bearing in mind it is the sixth consecutive quarter where we have had rising [activity]. I am delighted.” So, does the CBI really speak for Scottish business?
