I was pleased with the prominence you gave the essay on Gaelic (The word of Mod, Comment, October 19).

St Columba Gaelic Church has held Gaelic services every Sunday since 1770 and has been a beacon of hope for the language. The Church of Scotland as the national church has a particular role in this, and indeed St Columba is the "Gaelic church of Glasgow".

Now that national and local government have changed their approach to the language, it is vital that Gaelic culture is supported. Our congregation has always been committed to this and played a pivotal role, especially when our Gaelic choir provided the concert in 1891, which led to the formation of An Comunn Gaidhealach. The Mod was instituted the following year.

Anyone with an interest in the Gaelic/Highland culture is most welcome to share our fellowship.
