Apparently you can buy quite a bit for £1 ("Mockery for claim Yes vote would cost £1", The Herald, January 7).

For £1 extra a year, Scotland can have free personal care for the elderly, free university tuition, free prescriptions and free bus travel for the over-60s. I would not only be happy, but proud, to pay £1 extra per year to have a fair and just society that did not demonise the less fortunate and did not spend billions on weapons of mass destruction. Who would have thought £1 could go so far?
