I RECENTLY spent a couple of days in Swansea, and found when I attempted to buy a day pass from the driver on one of FirstGroup inWales's buses, using a Royal Bank of Scotland banknote, that the note was unacceptable.

The driver was very polite and radioed his supervisor, but the answer was still "no". Yet the previous day on an Arriva train there had been no problem with RBS notes.
FirstGroup is a very successful Scottish company based in Aberdeen. We all know to our cost what dreadful damage Messrs Goodwin, McKillop and their colleagues inflicted on RBS, but we had assumed that since the UK Government was forced in effect to nationalise it, our deposits were safe and the bank's notes were solidly based. Does the board of FirstGroup not share that view?
