David Stevenson made a good case for an independent Scotland having a share in "Bank of Britain" (We'll have a share of Bank of Britain, Letters, February 3).

When the Bank of England was taken into public ownership in 1946, it became The Bank of the United Kingdom, Britain and Northern Ireland.

Scotland and England being equal co-signatories to the Treaty of Union, it may be argued that if Scotland re-establishes independence, Scotland and England hold equal shares in the Bank of England. Meantime, the 1946 act transferred the entire capital stock to HM Treasury.
