Expanding Fairtrade markets will pass on benefits to farmers
Andrew McKie is quite wrong to assert that Fairtrade fixes prices and impoverishes farmers not involved in the scheme ("Free trade is the way to help Africa grow richer", The Herald, August 1).
He misunderstands the basis of the Fairtrade system. It does not fix prices. Fairtrade standards include a minimum floor price that ensures farmers can meet the costs of sustainable production should market prices fall below this level.
