As the author of the new book about artist Joan Eardley, I appreciate letters to The Herald (March 21 and 22) regarding the headline about the many letters written by her to her friend Audrey Walker half a century ago.
One of your correspondents advocates exploring Eardley's work rather than her sexuality. If he had actually read my book, he would find that this is precisely what the book does. Its aim is to continue to investigate the riches of her work, and for such exploration there must be a rounded view of Eardley's (quite complex) character. Please read the book – and then say what you think.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
