Fairtrade won’t end poverty but it is a step in the right direction

As supporters of Fairtrade for more years than we care to remember, we believe Andrew McKie has been misinformed about Fairtrade when he states: "Unlike Fairtrade, which is no more than a marketing exercise which fixes prices and impoverishes those farmers not included in the cartel, free trade allows everyone to grow richer" ("Free trade is the way to help Africa grow richer", The Herald, August 1).

The Fairtrade Foundation states: “Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.”
