Your leading article asks why violent crime rates are declining worldwide ("Crime rates are falling, but why?", The Herald, March 8).

A friend explained the reason to me - television and the rise of the internet. The young men who cause most of the trouble are too busy watching TV, surfing the net, writing blogs and following their friends on Facebook. This does not allow time to meet up in person with a real gang and have a bit of aggro. It is also easier to post hate messages on Twitter than to attack someone on the street. To sustain the decline in crime I suggest that all men aged between 16 and 30 should be entitled to a free smartphone.
