The Ryder Cup competition was a first-class sporting event, even when viewed only on television ("Tents and tensions down but fans leave on a high", The Herald, September 29); a great example of camaraderie.

But did we really need the spectacle of champagne being sprayed about by, and over, the winning team? What a pity to see this practice extended from motor racing circuits. Where next? Wimbledon, the Olympic or Commonwealth Games?

Bah, humbug.
