JEANNETTE Cannon (Letters, July 1) resurrects an issue which has been a concern of many, namely the obvious derelict state of our cemeteries .

In many cases the overturned gravestones are not the direct work of vandals. Sadly, due to enforcing legislation on health and safety, council employees often require to push over a stone into the horizontal position. That should certainly not be the end of the matter. The respective local councils should ensure that the necessary secure re-siting of each stone takes place.

Inevitably the cost factor arises. Perchance school buildings, libraries or any social work properties were vandalised then the remedial costs falls on the public purse. If such analogy is refuted then perhaps a submission to the National Lottery might be considered.

One thing is for sure, the continuing blight currently besetting our local cemeteries cannot continue. From all standpoints, not least of all respect and safety, our communities deserve better.
