Health levy will bring huge benefits to public health and the economy
Your story ("Scottish retailers claim 'health levy' will cost jobs", The Herald, October 6) highlights the expected lobbying over this issue from a retail sector keen to protect its members' interests.
However, there is a strong need to highlight the huge benefits – both to public health and Scotland’s economy – which can be brought to the nation by such a measure.
Preventative spending is key to Scotland’s long-term success. ASH Scotland’s response to last year’s Finance Committee inquiry into preventative spending concluded that prevention is better than cure and that tobacco control is a cost-effective public health measure. Smoking remains the biggest preventable cause of death and is responsible for a quarter of all deaths in Scotland.
