Now that President Obama has taken steps to deal, at least partially, with illegal immigration in the US , surely his next step, by way of Executive Order, must be to allow the haggis back into his country, ("In search of the Golden Haggis in its special year", The Herald, November 24).

Haggis has been effectively banned from entering the US since 1971, because of adverse opinion on sheep lung, one of its constituent parts. Can it really be argued that the fortunes of that country have not deteriorated since then? Maybe the citizens there are not renowned for their consumption of ragout, olio, and fricasee, but they do consume huge quantities of burgers, pancakes and hot dogs, which can only be regarded, in comparison with haggis, as "trash" and "skinking ware".

Come on, Mr President, put the US back on the road to recovery: "Gie her a haggis."
