I AM becoming increasingly irritated by what I consider to be facile comments regarding the role that Scottish soldiers have undertaken in military campaigns since the Union (Letters, September 1).

I was a National Service infantryman in a Scottish regiment and found a broad mix, especially amongst the regulars, representative of all parts of the UK.

The recurring theme of disproportionate losses (given credence in some of the First World War commemorations) does nothing to honour the sacred memory of those who fell, whatever their birthplace, in defence or on behest of the United Kingdom in all wars and conflicts.
