It is Westminster civil service that appears politicised

IT is unfortunate that the Unionist coalition appears to be turning the heat on the civil service in Scotland, complaining about "politicisation" ("Claim Scottish civil service chief frozen out denied", The Herald, February 8).

Those civil servants are only carrying out their responsibilities to the existing Scottish Government, which currently includes delivering that elected government's manifesto commitment to a constitutional referendum. The irony is that the Unionist complaint might more reasonably be directed at a Westminster civil service, which is currently supporting the UK Government in privatising the NHS in England and dismantling the UK welfare benefits system, neither of which were detailed in any political manifesto.
