I AGREE with Tom Shields on many things but I must correct him about his article where he associates the late Jimmy Reid exclusively with Labour ("Tom Shields on...
New old Labour", The Herald, July 30). In the last few years of his life Jimmy had seen the light and joined the Scottish National Party.
I drove him to campaign in the Glasgow East by-election, which was won by John Mason of the SNP. Jimmy was a member of the Bute branch of the SNP until his untimely death in 2010 and is much missed.
I am pleased that the foundation set up in his name is promoting the concept of the common weal, which has been well received throughout all the groups promoting independence.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
