Alexander McKay's statement that the "pro-UK" side won the referendum is indisputable (Accept the settled will of the country, Letters, October 19).

More remarkable is his admission that the campaign did consist of a "pro-UK" side and therefore, presumably, a "pro-Scotland" side. He also asserted that "the dream is dead".

The British state threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Scottish electorate and in the first test of public opinion for 300 years an amazing 45% of voters, in a big turnout, voted Yes to independence.

As one of the 45%, I voted for democracy, a country where my vote would actually count, no more war-mongering and no obscene nuclear missiles on the Clyde. On reflection, please sir, can I keep my dream?
