Debbie Miller (Letters July 25) concurs with David Moore (Letters, July 23 ) that individuals need to take personal responsibility for basic maintenance of both mind and body and adds that we need to help people to take better care of their own health before the NHS has to.

Agreed.

And when they remain hell-bent on drinking, smoking, or eating their way to ill-health those with the wherewithal should stump up.

WITH regard to the article about pensioners drinking at home ("Daily drink for pensioners at home brings health warning", The Herald, July 25) and your editorial ("The case for moderation in drinking for all ages", The Herald July 25), I wish to protest at this intrusion into my private life.

I am 73, but I am not driven to drink by loneliness or boredom. I drink wine and the occasional beers at home because I like them. I also like ginger beer and Irn-Bru, so I wonder if there are any soft drink units I should be careful to observe.
