I WAS saddened to read that 90 per cent of blue tit nests have failed in Glasgow ("Experts stumped after disastrous breeding season for the urban blue tit", The Herald, July 4).

I was aware of the problem through my membership of the British Trust for Ornithology. I am 13, and take a real interest in birds of all kinds.

Readers might like to know that we had a good year in our garden nest box at Peterhead - no fewer than eight fledglings. The nest box is in a secluded garden with many hedges and trees in the immediate vicinity where the male and female parents evidently found plenty of food.

It was a pleasure capturing them on camera on exiting the nest and later feeding around the garden.
