MICHAEL Fallon, the Secretary of State for Defence, was hinting at the need for British forces to bomb IS/Isil/Daeshn Syria as well as in Iraq in.

What do we call them? Does it matter?

When worrying over nomenclature, perhaps the Government should look closer to home.

The Secretary of State for Defence should revert to his pre-1964 title, Secretary of State for War, for that is what the job has entailed for much of the last 60 years. The Falklands, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya are just some of the areas where Defence Secretaries have deployed our forces with nary a threat to our shores.

This may start a trend for naming Government ministers according to what their job really requires them to do.

Jeremy Hunt is the Private Health Secretary; Iain Duncan Smith is the Minister for Low Paid Work and don't you dare claim Welfare, Michael Gove is the Injustice Minister and David Mundell is the Governor General of Scotland.

However George Osborne will still be Chancer of the Exchequer.
