ALISTAIR Carmichael was clearly at fault and the fact that the leak of the dodgy memo was probably done on the spur of the moment at the height of the election campaign is no excuse.

But it is not good enough for David C Purdie (Letters, May28) to excuse the former First Minister's repeated assertions that legal advice was that an independent Scotland would automatically inherit membership of the EU although no specific legal advice had been taken on the grounds that he "thought" this would be later confirmed.

Please don't tell me it was the thought that counts.

WHEN Sir Malcolm Bruce (and other "eminent" Liberal Democrats) use techniques of neutralisation - "everybody else does it" -- to excuse Alistair Carmichael's conduct, they are effectively promoting an approach which dislocates behaviour from any appropriate standards in public life. As such their approach is reprehensible.
