Numbers that don’t add up

Your interesting story about Ian Adam, the famous voice coach ("Row over right to use the name of Scots singing coach to the stars", The Herald, April 6), perpetuates a myth about his age which crops up every time his name appears in print.

Allegedly, Ian was 64 when he died four years ago, which would place his year of birth at 1943.

I can vouch for the fact that, by that time, Ian and I were already classmates in the senior department of Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen. So, if he had still been alive, he would now be celebrating his 80th birthday.
