Your photograph of a Russian submarine shows it flying two St Andrew's Cross flags - blue on white, where our Saltire is white on blue (What the Russian sub in Scottish waters really says about Putin's view of the West, News, December 14).

This prompts the thought that rather than "seeing off" Russian ships in our waters as potential enemies, we should invite them to visit our ports as welcome friends. We do not have to agree with all of the politics of Russia to welcome individual Russian seamen to meet individual Scots in our streets. This would do more to contribute to world peace than Trident nuclear-armed submarines can.
