Reversed priorities

HELEN Lane records that she feels very vulnerable when backing out of her garden as she is nearly at the other side of the road by the time she can see if anyone is approaching (Letters, December 20).

My understanding is that the Highway Code advises reversing in if possible and driving out, although it is not automatically an offence to reverse out.
