IT is wonderful news that the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's new rehearsal space and HQ is moving forward ("Design for £14m orchestra building unveiled", The Herald, February 8).
It is also good to hear of promised future greater connections "with schools and community groups throughout Scotland". The RSNO's visits this year to Shetland and to Orkney are to be commended also.
In this Royal Jubilee year it would be wonderful to hear that the "national" orchestra will resume its practice of visiting Scotland's fifth city, Inverness, at least twice a year. The audiences at Eden Court Theatre were astounded when orchestral concerts were reduced from 10 to only three per year in 2009. The BBC SSO is again visiting twice this year (and will have a full house on February 24), but the RSNO still only comes once each year. The theatre, the Minister and the RSNO are fully aware of audience disappointment but the financial politics behind this have not been revealed. What is going on?
