THE shame of meals in our schools is not that horsemeat has been found to be contained in them but rather that they are bought in bulk, pre-cooked and pre-packed, transported sometimes hundreds of miles ("School in horse burger scandal is named", The Herald, February 23).

If Scotland, with its vast wealth of natural fresh produce, wants to raise healthy schoolchildren it should be cooking the food in school kitchens .

The same applies to our hospitals; fresh food and well balanced diets for all the patients and staff who have to eat there.
