Square is not place for sporting events

Ian Brooke is right to correct me but he may get his sand yet for the prospect of beach volleyball in George Square has in fact been incorporated into the council's bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympics (Letters, January 24).

Since that is the case, we can only assume Gordon Matheson's proposed makeover will not include reinstating the trees and grass on the western side of the square, which will no doubt continue to be a barren expanse, interspersed with frantic building site activity. Why can't the council reinstate the square to its former glory and acquire another central site for its cherished events?
