Strathclyde University sociology move is short-sighted

Strathclyde University's proposal to "disinvest" from sociology will lead to a loss in academic and other posts.

I am deeply unhappy with this move (“Courses to go under university cuts plan”, The Herald, May 11).

This seems a very short-sighted move which will rob the faculty and university of the ability to provide undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Sociology is a small subject area, with a group of dedicated staff who work hard with limited resources to provide excellence in both teaching and research. My area of external examiner responsibility is on the MA programme and I am always impressed by the quality of student work, the relationship between staff and students and the core importance of the staff’s research activity in the quality of the student experience.
